5,000 (electronic) lockers at the Flemish government in Brussels
Last year, the Flemish Government in Brussels began construction of the Marie-Elisabeth Belpaire building, designed to combine both living and working spaces. In 2024, the building was officially opened for use by Flemish government employees, and we were proud to install 5,000 lockers, including 4,000 electronic office lockers.
Across 22 floors of open office spaces, we installed locker walls featuring 180 electronic lockers per floor. These lockers are operated using employees' personal access tags, the same used to enter the building. RFID technology allows staff to easily select and secure a locker for the day, with the locker automatically released at the end of the workday.
Some lockers are designated for team use, providing shared access for team members to store and exchange documents or other items.
Custom-Made Wooden Lockers
The custom wooden locker walls are more than just lockers – they also feature integrated open shelves and seating areas. These thoughtfully designed spaces provide areas for employees to make private phone calls, focus on tasks, or simply relax. In addition to office lockers, we also installed locker rooms and visitor lockers. Accessibility was a key consideration, with controls placed at wheelchair-friendly heights to ensure ease of use for all employees.
Sustainable and Circular Design
The lockers meet several circular economy standards, including the use of 100% circular wood from Unilin. This reclaimed wood is sourced from industrial wood waste, sustainable forest management, and roadside maintenance. The wood is fully recyclable, and thanks to an innovative production process, it can be returned and transformed into new wood sheets.
